21:20-22
We may worry about the reasonableness of Jesus expecting figs from this tree at the wrong time of year, the disciples were just amazed at how quickly the thing had withered. Jesus has used this incident to illustrate the power faith. And note that He has used this not so much to demonstrate what He can do, but to demonstrate what we can do! And he has used a silly example. The Great Commission is not to go around cursing fig trees, but to make disciples of all nations. Jesus wants us to have more faith. Now, this is not grounds for a “name it and claim it” approach to life. We need to look at this in the context of all of Scripture. Jesus is making one point here, one point among many points. So we should seek to grasp this one point within the context of all the other points. We are to be Christlike, living in obedience to Christ, being part of His mission. Within that context we should expect our prayers to be answered.
21:23
Jesus enters the temple courts, where the day before He had turfed out the money lenders and dove sellers. The religious leaders would certainly be aware of this, and so they come to Him demanding by what authority He is doing these things. For Jesus is upsetting the normal operation of things.
