41:10-15
Ishmael carried on in his evil ways, but Johanan and the army officers with him went to fight against Ishmael. Many of Ishmael’s captives went over to Johanan, but Ishmael and eight of his men fled to the Ammonites. What we have here is a fairly typical scene of chaos after the collapse of a society.
41:16-18
Johanan and his men feared that the Babylonians would seek reprisals because the governor they had installed had been assassinated. This was a reasonable fear. In the Second World War the Germans executed (literally) reprisals in Czechoslovakia after Heydrich was killed by resistance fighters. So Johanan, his men, and the people rescued from Ishmael made their way to Egypt, hoping to escape the Babylonians.
