40:11,12
Jews had been scattered in many of the neighbouring countries, such as Moab, Ammon and Edom. When they heard that a remnant had been left in Judah, many of them returned there. They had an abundant harvest of wine and fruit. So things seemed to be going well with Judah.
40:13-16
Gedaliah was warned by Johanan that Ishmael was planning to murder him. However, despite the warning Gedaliah did nothing. He refused to believe the warning. We see here many human failings. As 40:12 shows, things were actually relatively good for those who returned, with the abundance of wine and fruit from the harvest. Yet there are always those who will cause trouble. This is something we see often enough if we look at the politics of our own nation, or any other nation. It can even be the case within churches. We see also the naivety of Gedaliah.
