21:33
We now come to the parable of the tenants, and this is another one directed at the religious leaders. This time a landowner has carefully built his vineyard. The point of the wall, winepress etc is to stress that the landowner had provided all that was needed. The tenants were looking after a readymade vineyard. In the same way, we have a readymade world! We did not make it, we did not set the sun in place, we did not create the climate system etc. Yet we think we have no need for God, that we can manage without Him and have no obligation towards Him. This is a foolish attitude.
21:34-39
The landowner went away and at harvest time sent a servant to collect his earnings. However, the tenants thought they would take possession of the vineyard, that everything was rightfully theirs. So they beat up the servant. When another servant arrived they killed him. Finally the landowner sent his son, thinking they would respect him. Instead, the tenants saw this as their chance to take full possession of the place, and so they killed the son. The parable illustrates the corruption of the human heart. Rejecting God represents utter stupidity on our part, and leads to evil.
