38:21-23
Jeremiah tells Zedekiah that if he refuses to surrender then his fears will be realised. The women in the palace would taunt the king, saying that his “trusted friends” misled him. Now, because he believed them, his feet would be stuck in the mud and his so-called friends have deserted him. He, along with his wives and children would be handed over to the Babylonians and the city would be burnt down.
38:24-28
Yet again, we see the king full of fear. He tells Jeremiah that he is to keep their conversation secret. The king is motivated by the fear of man, rather than the fear of the Lord. The officials did indeed come to Jeremiah, but Jeremiah followed the king’s instructions and told them nothing of his conversation with the king. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard until the day that the Baylonians captured the city.
