Isaiah 62;5-7 - Give yourselves no rest

62:5
The marriage motif is then emphasised all the more. Her “builder” would marry her. Her creator would be utterly committed to her, “as a young man marries a young woman”. Notice the implication for marriage here. God is the Creator and He is and would be dedicated to making Israel beautiful, dedicated to blessing her and seeing her flourish. So the implication is that a husband should be committed to blessing his wife and seeing her flourish. This is no patriarchal vision, this is no case on men dominating women. The bridegroom is to delight in his wife, and God delights in His people.

62:6,7

“I have posted watchman ...” The fidelity of Israel and of the church waxes and wanes, but in all circumstances God has posted watchman. Here it refers to watchman on the walls of Jerusalem, and it also applies to the church. Israel is God’s nation, Christ is the head of the church. So men can what they like, but God is in ultimate control. God’s watchman will never be silent, and will give themselves no rest. Nor are we to give God any rest! Jesus welcomed the importunate widow, He rewarded the Syro-Phonecian woman. A “religious” approach to prayer is not always the best! So we are commanded to give God no rest until He has established Israel and His church, and makes them the praise of all the earth. In this regard, God want us to make a nuisance of ourselves!
