Isaiah 60:18-20 - The Lord will be your everlasting light

60:18,19
Violence and destruction would be far from the city. Instead of relying on walls, salvation would protect them, and praise would be their gates. The Lord would be their everlasting light, and God would be their glory. So there is a transfer in the things we normally depend upon. Rev 21:23 alludes to this verse when it says that in the new Jerusalem there is no need for sun or moon, for the Lord is our light. If we wish to understand Revelation at all we need to be aware of the numerous ways in which it draws on Old Testament prophecy.

60:20
The sun and the moon shine for a time, on a twenty four hour cycle. However, the sun setting here is used metaphorically. When things go well we know that everything will come to an end one day, things will not go well forever. That is human life, but there will come a time when the sun will set no more, for the Lord Himself will be our light. And we can experience a foretaste of that now. If we put our trust in the Lord, if we make Him the foundation of our life, then all sorts of ups and downs may happen in life, but He is a constant source of hope and security. “And your days of sorrow will end”. While we all know the cycle of ups and downs in this life, we should also know that there is a time when then this will end, when sorrow will be gone forever. Hallelujah!
