Isaiah 61:1 - The Lord has anointed me

61:1
These words were quoted by Jesus in Luke 4:18-21, and He said that these words were fulfilled in their hearing. Jesus quite clearly saw Himself as the fulfillment of this prophecy. The servant was filled with the Holy Spirit and was anointed to proclaim good news. Anointed means in effect appointed and empowered to proclaim good news, so the good news would have effect. It would not be an ineffectual proclamation. An awful lot of Isaiah is concerned with sin, the judgement that sin brings, the forgiveness of sin, repentance from sin, and transformation of lives. There are also many who suffer. In some cases this suffering is a result of their own sin and failings, in other cases suffering is a result of other people’s sin and failings, and in yet other cases it is a result of general sin and failings. And, of course, suffering can be a result of some combination of these things. Jesus comes to set people free from the results of sin, as well as sin itself.
