49:1
These words belong to the servant of the Lord. It is clearly speaking about Jesus, but what did it mean in the original context? It is probably Isaiah saying this. The words are addressed to the distant islands, God’s words apply to the whole world. Isaiah had been chosen by God long before his birth. God had a reason and a purpose for creating you and me. He knew who we were long before we were born. Christ has always been God, the salvation plan was not a matter of something being cobbled together in a hurry to cope with an unforeseen emergency. The plan was set in eternity.
49:2
Isaiah’s strength was the words that he spoke. He spoke the word of God, Jesus is the Word. For a long time things were hidden or concealed. Judah did not know what was going on. After the Assyrian episode she did not realise where things were going, and once in captivity in Babylon had no idea if or how she would escape. God’s whole plan for mankind was hidden until the chosen time.
