The Babylonians had relied on magic. God is mocking them, “encouraging” them to carry on with their spells and sorceries because they might succeed! Of course, the implication is that there is no chance of them succeeding. For wise men the Babylonians had astrologers who studied the skies and the stars looking for meaningful signs. This “wisdom” has only worn the nation out, because of the false guidance it gave.

47:14,15

All the wise men of the East would be burnt up like stubble, ie their wisdom would be shown up for the foolishness and uselessness that it was. We need to be careful who we look to for insight and understanding. If we look to the wrong source then the “wisdom” we receive will be useless and will only wear us out. The current vogue that transgenderism actually has a basis in reality is an example of this today. The contortions society has to go through in affirming that transgenderism is true is only wearing people out.
