4:10
The cross was not the end of suffering. In Colossians 1:24 Paul talks about carrying Christ’s sufferings. The cross was the end of the work of atonement, the completion of justification, but it was not the end of suffering. But this happens so that the life of Jesus might be seen in us. The goal is not that people think we are great, but that people see the greatness of Jesus.
4:11,12
Paul and his companions frequently faced dangerous situations. By nature we don't like being in danger, but if we look at the Bible we see that many, even most, of the heroes lived in constant danger or opposition. Moses, David, Daniel, Jeremiah, Peter and Paul are all examples, along with Jesus Himself. But this happened not so that they would be defeated, but so that the life of Jesus would be seen in their lives. This might sometimes happen through miraculous intervention, but more often will happen through our reacting and responding differently. So we may go through difficult circumstances, but it is so the life of Jesus may become manifest in others.
