Revelation 12:13-17 - God is always in control

The dragon pursued the woman, the woman representing God's people. But the woman was given wings and enabled to escape to a place of safety for the time of persecution. We need to be careful in interpreting these visions and not read more than is justified into anyone of them. There are numerous parts of Revelation, not to mention the rest of the New Testament, that make it clear that there will be times when the church suffers great persecution. Here, and elsewhere in Revelation, we see that the church is also protected. In the midst of all circumstances God is looking after us, even in the darkest times. He has always made provision for us.
Satan is never in control, even when evil seems to be rampant.
The serpent tried to overwhelm the church with a flood from its mouth, but the earth opened up. This enraged the dragon, so it went off to make war against the saints, against those who hold fast to their belief in Christ.
So we see clearly the persecution the church suffers and God's protection in the midst of it.
