Revelation 9:1-12 - the first woe

The star in verse 1 is probably an angel, but probably not a fallen angel. The star was given a key to the abyss. The star could only do what God gave it to do. The abyss was inhabited by spirits. The important message is that everything is under God's control. The star can only open the abyss because God has ordained it, and the spirits can only be released because God has released them.
Locusts and scorpions are released and are given power to torment those who did not have the seal of God. So we see that there is a limit on what they can do, and there are somethings that God's people are spared from.
The scorpions and locusts were only allowed to torment men, not kill them. Though the torment would be so bad that men would long to die.
We then get a dramatic description of these locusts. We should remember that this is a vision.
The locusts were ruled by an angel of the abyss called Abaddon or Apollyon, this means destruction.
So the first woe was past, but two more were to come.
