Revelation 6:9-17 - Martyrs and Wrath

The first four seals focused on what is happening on earth, now we get a glimpse into what is happening in heaven. This too does away with any comfortable notions of God's plans.
The fifth seal shows the souls of those who had been slain for their faith. A first things look hopeful, for they cry out to God to bring judgement upon the earth and to avenge them. As an aside we should note this attitude here. Too often we are far too nice and think that Jesus is "nice". The evidence of the Bible weighs very much against such a view. Judgement will come. If we are persecuted we need to realise that it is those who persecute who are in real trouble.
The martyrs are given a white robe, but then told to wait a while until the full number of martyrs is complete. Part of the outworking of God's plan involves Christians dying their for their faith.
Then the sixth seal is opened and what we think of as apocalyptic events start happening. The sun turned black, the moon to red and stars fell from the sky, and mountains and islands were removed from their place.
Next all mankind, from the least to the greatest, are filled with terror and they desperately want to hide from God. Remember that Adam and Eve wanted to hide from God after they had sinned. For the wrath of God is about to come upon the earth.
