1:32
People are always attracted by healings, especially those that appear to be genuine, and Jesus’ healings definitely were genuine. In those days medicine was far less advanced than it is today, but even today there are many conditions that cannot be adequately treated. So many people brought sick or demon-possessed people to Jesus. Note that demon possession is a real phenomenon.
1:33,34
Jesus proved very popular indeed. The mention of “after sunset” (4:32) meant that the Sabbath rules no longer applied, the “day” ran from the previous evening to the following evening. “The whole town” could be an example of hyperbole. “Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons”. Jesus had power and authority over everything. As we saw earlier, the demons knew who Jesus was, and here we are told that Jesus would not allow the demons to speak. Things would happen in accordance with God’s timing.
