2 Samuel 7:19-22 - How great you are, Sovereign Lord!

7:19

In wanting to build a temple David was focused on the here and now. God’s plans went far into the future. We all tend to be rather short sighted, we need long term vision, or at least to know that God has a long term vision. He knows far more than we do, and sees far ahead, unlike us.

7:20,21

“What more can David say to you?” It is so essential that we recognise how great God is, how much greater than us! If we look in the psalms, many of which were written by David, we see a repeated recognition of the greatness of the Lord. God acted “for the sake of your word and according to your will”. Our focus should not be on us, but on the Lord. When we do that we discover that He is actually more focused on us than we ever imagine. And I would rather have God’s will for my life, than my will for my life. “You have done this great thing and made it known to your servant”. I think David is speaking about the future plans that God has disclosed, and David is treating these as if they are certain to happen (which they are).

7:22

The greatness of God is axiomatic to the gospel. All sorts of things happen in life, on a personal and a wider level, that seem to contradict that. That is one of the reasons why worship is so important and so powerful. It is a declaration of truth, and a declaration of truth in the heavenly realms. There is only one God. Anything, be it an individual, a demonic force, a circumstance or whatever, that is seeking to claim otherwise is lying, and we need to recognise that. “As we have heard with our own ears”. It is important to praise, to declare the truth, and it is important to listen to the truth.
