Mark 1:29-31 - The fever left her

1:29

The freeing of the demon possessed man in the synagogue was not a one-off event. After they left the synagogue they went to the home of Simon and Andrew. In Luke’s account the events recorded here are given before the calling of the disciples, as they do in Matthew's account (Matt 8:14,15). Indeed in Matthew they are placed after the Sermon on the Mount. The gospel writers were not written on a purely chronological basis, though the rough timelines are correct, but they sometimes put events in order for thematic reasons.

1:30,31

Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a fever and the disciples told Jesus. Jesus went up to her, “took her hand and helped her up, the fever left her and she began to wait on them”. Note that there is no mention of demonic involvement here. In the gospel accounts some illnesses are associated with demonic involvement, some are not. The chronology issue referred to in my comments on 1:29 are a genuine question. Some will question the so-called difference between here and Matthew. Matt 8:15 says “He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.” There really is no difference at all and to say there is is simply silly. Likewise comparing it with Luke 4:39. What the “differences” do show is three different people giving accounts of the same event.
