2 Samuel 8:11-18 - David reigned over all Israel

8:11-14

David knew that it was the Lord who had given him victory, and he dedicated the gifts and the plunder to the Lord. He struck down eighteen thousand Edomites, and the Edomites became subject to David. I am not quite sure how this fits in with Deut 23:7,8.

8:15-18

“David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people”. This sums up the state of affairs that the passage wants to portray. David had defeated all the enemies, bringing peace to the nation, and he is ruling his people justly. We are then given the names of various key people in the land. Joab is over the army. The “recorder” was probably something of a herald. There were priests, it is also mentioned that “David’s sons were priests”, they could also be called “chief officials”. It is not clear exactly what their role was, for they were not from the tribe of Levi, so could not be full temple priests.
