Romans 13:8-10 - Owe no one anything

13:8

There is probably a section heading between 13:7 and 13:8 in your Bible, but maybe this verse is also linked to the previous verse. We feel bad if we think we owe someone something, and if we refuse to pay taxes or some such thing, then our conscience will suffer. We will feel bad. So we should ensure that we have no debts. But we have an unending debt of love. We have never loved enough.

13:9,10

If we love then we have fulfilled the Law. Paul then recites the latter half of the ten commandments, saying these are summed up by the command “love your neighbour as yourself”. This comes from Lev 19:18 and was repeated by Jesus (Mk 12:31). Love does no wrong to a neighbour, instead it seeks the best for the neighbour. So if we love we fulfil the Law. Jesus said that He came not to abolish the Law, but to fulfil it (Matt 5:17).
