5:23-28
The woman was to drink the bitter water which had the curses written on it. If she was guilty then the water would cause her great pain. If she was innocent then she would not be affected and would continue to have children. The key point here is that the matter is being put in the hands of the Lord. The husband is full of jealousy, and in such circumstances it is difficult for him to think straight.
5:29-31
In this case the woman shall bear her iniquity, if indeed she is guilty. There does seem to be a presumption that she is probably guilty, but the matter is being set before the Lord for confirmation one way or the other. The husband is not held accountable for the woman’s actions.
