Numbers 8:1-22 - Setting up the lamps

8:1-4

Details on the lampstands can be found in Ex 25:31-40, and Ex 37:17-24. Here we read that Aaron set up the lampstand as the Lord had shown Moses. “When you set up the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand”. When things are set up as the Lord has instructed, then they serve the purpose for which the Lord ordained them.

8:5-22

The Levites were given to God in place of the firstborn of Israel. Perhaps Paul’s urging in Romans 12:1 for us to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice has some relation to this. The Levites were a living sacrifice to the Lord. The Levites were to be purified. We are purified through the blood of Jesus, and we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Wave offerings were made for the Levites. Parts of these offerings were waved before the Lord as an indication that they were being dedicated to the Lord. The Levites purified themselves from sin (8:21). The Levites were, of course, not sinless, just as we are not sinless, but the blood had cleansed them.
