Numbers 10:1-28 - Silver Trumpets

10:1-10

Silver trumpets were to be used to call the people. If only one trumpet was blown then it was just the chiefs who were summoned together. If two trumpets were blown then all the people were called to gather together. The trumpets were to be blown to sound an alarm, and also at the time of the appointed feasts. They were to serve something like a prayer, calling out to God, either in a time of emergency, or at feast time. Now one might ask did God need the trumpets to remind Him of what was going on? Obviously not. It is like prayer. Does God need our prayers to tell Him what is happening and what we need? No. The trumpets and the prayers are a matter of building up a relationship with God, of our looking to God in all situations, whether times of danger or times of gladness.

10:11-28

We now get a travel report. These travel reports are interspersed between the law giving sections. God teaches us as we go along through life. It seems that this journey was the first major step forward since leaving Egypt. The tribes set out in the set order. The Tabernacle had to be taken down, and the Levites carried out their designated tasks.
