25:8-13
There was also a sabbath of sabbaths, so every fiftieth year was a jubilee. The jubilee applied to crops, which were not to be harvested, and everyone was to return to their own land. One might see this as a “great reset” if that term had gathered such a meaning of its own, but it was indeed a reset. We will learn more of what this reset meant in the succeeding verses. The “returning to their own property” also has the implication that any property sold was to be returned to its original owners.
25:14-17
Attention and meaning now turns to debts. 25:14 sets out the key principle “do not take advantage of each other”. In all sectors of society we see numerous examples of people taking advantage of one another. We should not do this. Land that was sold was effectively sold “leasehold” rather than “freehold”. So the price was to be determined by the length of the lease left. So land would be more expensive at the start of the cycle than it would be towards the end.
