16:8,9
Just as Jeremiah was not enter a house of mourning, nor was he to enter a house of rejoicing. So he was not to mourn with those who mourn, nor to rejoice with those who rejoice. God had utterly rejected the nation, and He tells Jeremiah here that He will bring an end to the sounds of joy and gladness, to the joy of a wedding feast. At one time we may have wondered how this could happen, but with the covid-19 lockdowns we know that these things can indeed happen. However, the situation that was about to befall Jerusalem was much, much worse than anything we have currently gone through. God tells Jeremiah that he will see things in his day. Here he is not prophesying things that are far off.
16:10-13
Jeremiah was to tell the people all this, and they would ask why? People can be so blind to the truth. We carry on in disobedience to the Lord oblivious to what we are doing. God outlines the reasons why. First of all, their ancestors had forsaken the Lord by following other gods and disobeying the Law of God. This was not a recent sin, but one which had been going on for a long time. However, the people were not being punished for the sins of the fathers. For they were doing even worse things, they had behaved more wickedly. They followed the “stubbornness of their evil hearts” instead of obeying the Lord. The people wanted to serve other gods, so they would be banished to a land of other gods where they would indeed serve other gods. God would give them the desire of their hearts!
