3:24-26
Jesus then expands on the point. First, a kingdom divided cannot stand, so if Satan was indeed driving out Satan his kingdom is done for. “A house divided” is a term sometimes used in common speech, and it originates from the Bible, as do many commonly used phrases. It is essentially saying the same thing as a kingdom divided. Finally, He says if Satan is divided then his end has come. Now Satan’s defeat had indeed come, but not in the way that Jesus spoke of here.
3:27
Jesus’s argument then takes a more positive turn. He has just been demonstrating that it is ridiculous to say that demons are driven out by satanic power. Now He says that it is perfectly reasonable that He is casting out demons. If someone is demon possessed then the demon needs to be dealt with before the person can be saved (“plundering the strong man’s house”). This principle can also be applied at a wider level. Note also the implied assumption that demonic possession is real and needs to be dealt with. We need to be aware of this in our day.
