13:23,24
Absalom now plans to exact vengeance on Amnon. It was the sheep-shearing season and he invited all the King’s sons to come, he also went to the king and invited him to come along. Sheep shearing time was also a time for feasting (1 Sam 25). The location of the party was some distance from Jerusalem, so Absalom probably assumed David would not come, but the invite was a cover, making it look like the event was purely innocent.
13:25-27
As expected, David declined the invitation. Absalom made a show of trying to persuade David to come. Having “failed” in this, he then urged David to let Amnon attend. David agreed to this, so Amnon went along with the rest of David’s sons.
13:28,29
Absalom then enacted his plan. He would wait until Amnon was somewhat inebriated, then he would order his men to kill Amnon. Note that Absalom would not do the deed himself, though he does stress that he is taking full responsibility for the order. Absalom’s men carried out the deed, and seeing what had happened the rest of David’s sons fled.
