3:11,12
There were people with impure spirits as well. When they saw Jesus they fell down before Him. Presumably this means that the people they had possessed fell down. They also cried out, again presumably through the person possessed, “You are the Son of God”. It is always worth noting these examples of the high view of Jesus expressed in the gospels. The notion that the concept of the divinity of Jesus was a later development really is totally without foundation. Jesus commanded the demons not to tell others about Him.
3:13
There are various groups against Jesus, most notably the religious leaders, but also Jesus’ own family. Here we have the twelve who, bar one, are for Jesus. As was his habit, Jesus went up a mountainside. There He called those whom he wanted, and they came to Him. So we see the two sided nature of being saved. We are chosen by Christ, but we also have to respond. We want to set one in opposition to the other, not seeing how God’s sovereignty and human responsibility can coexist. Well the Bible has no problem with it, so neither should we.
