13:30-33
Before David’s sons had returned to Jerusalem a report reached David that Absalom had killed all his sons. No reason is given as to why this “fake news” was sent, and the commentaries I have read are silent on the point! David was, of course, greatly dismayed. Jonadab then appears on the scene again with the correct information, only Amnon had been killed. Perhaps Jonadab was behind the fake news, so that when the accurate news came David would be relieved as well as sorrowful at the death of Amnon. Jonadab was manipulating the situation.
13:34-36
Absalom fled, knowing that he would not be popular with David. The watchman at Jerusalem then saw the rest of David’s sons returning, proving that Jonadab’s version of events was indeed true. The king’s sons arrived and were full of mourning, and the king joined them in wailing over the death of Amnon.
13:37-39
Absalom continued his flight. Ending up fifty miles or so away from Jerusalem. Talmai was his maternal grandfather. Absalom stayed there for three years. Despite what Absalom had done, David longed to be with Absalom. What we see is a slow burn of the judgement on David coming to pass.
