4:11
“Let us, therefore make every effort ....” While the Bible is clear that we are saved by grace alone, and on the sovereignty of God. And Jesus said “you did not choose me, but I chose you” (Jn 15:16). However, the Bible has no problem whatsoever with us having to make an effort, with us having to do stuff. So if in thinking about the sovereignty of God and human responsibility (a term I much prefer to “human freewill” and especially to “libertarian freewill”) we think that the two are somehow at odds with each other, then our thinking is wrong, for God has no problem with the two concepts co-existing. So the writer calls on us to “make every effort to enter that rest”. Now the “effort” he is thinking of here is not a “works salvation”, but is believing and understanding the gospel. As Jesus said in John 6:29, “Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” And we are to do this so that “no-one will perish by following their example of disobedience”.
