We now move on to a group of people in a town causing trouble. And these troublemakers have led the whole town astray to worship other gods. Yet again there is a reminder that these are “gods you have not known”. There is no comparison between the false gods and God. And there is no logical reason whatsoever to go chasing after other gods.

If this sort of situation arises then it is to be fully investigated. It is not to be left to fester. Nor is there to be a knee jerk reaction. It is to be properly investigated. If it is found to be true, then serious and rapid action needs to be taken, but only if it is true. All sorts of rumours and allegations can circulate. The action to be taken is drastic, putting to death all who live in the town, and completely destroying the town. I will say again, that we are not to put to death false teachers today, but we should deal with these matters with the utmost seriousness.
