13:16
All the plunder in the town (this would initially have been gathered while taking possession of the land) was to be collected and burnt, along with the town itself, as an offering to the Lord. The town was to be left as a ruin. We should note that the “town” would be more akin to a village in terms of size.
13:17,18
If these commands were followed then the Lord would have mercy on Israel, and they would prosper if they followed His commands. We are not told here what would happen if the commands were not followed. The implication is that they would not be blessed by God. Too often churches have allowed false teachings to linger on, and this always has bad consequences. False teachings are poisonous, affecting people’s lives. They need to be dealt with properly and swiftly. Of course, there is a danger of going to the opposite extreme, but the risk most churches run today is that of not taking false teaching seriously enough.
