“Convinced of this ...” So Paul now seems to have decided that he would remain alive for now, so that he could help the Philippian church through their present difficulties and to continue to encourage them. If we accept a date of around 61 AD it was at most a year or two later that he did actually die. If the latter has an earlier date then things are different. Anyway, the key message to learn from all this is Paul’s attitude to life (and death). We live for Christ.

Paul continues his reasoning, and states that the Philippians may glory in Christ when he is able to come and see them again. So we see that the goal is that they glory in Christ (not in Paul), but that Paul’s supposed visit to them is an important part of this. What we do in this life matters, and we should live it to the full serving Christ.
