5:16
This commandment is described by Paul as the first commandment with a promise (Eph 6:2). In fact, it is the only one of the ten commandments with a promise. The promise is that if they honoured their parents, then it would go well with them in the land, and they would live there for a long time. Honouring our parents continues to be an important custom that we should follow.
5:17-20
We now get a series of four short commandments. The commands are given without any explanation, the reason for them should be self-evident. There should be no murder, respect for life. There should be no adultery, respect for marriage, and for other people’s relationships. There should be no stealing, respect for other people’s property. There should be no giving false testimony, respect for integrity and the truth. When any of these things begin to breakdown, then it is a clear sign that society is heading for breakdown.
