6:10-12
All of this chapter is preparing the people for living in the Promised Land. Moses reminds them that the promise goes right back to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not a recent innovation. It contains many large cities that Israel played no part in building. Indeed, the land would contain all sorts of things that Israel played no part in providing. It was given to Israel by the Lord. The only claim that Israel had upon the land was the God had given it to them, so it was vital that they did not forget the Lord. They are reminded again that He brought them out of slavery.
6:13
They were to fear the Lord alone. They were to know that their well being depended solely upon the Lord, not on anyone else. So they must serve the Lord alone. Taking an oath in the name of something meant that some allegiance towards that thing, or some fear of that thing, was held. So they must only take oaths in the name of the Lord.
