6:1-3
Moses now starts to teach the people the decrees, or “statutes and rules”, that the Lord gave him. Moses was to teach these rules to the people so that they would observe them in the Promised Land. God was preparing them for life. They were to be taught to the future generations as well, because if the people obeyed these commands, then they would live long in the land, and it would go well with them. God gave His commands for that the people would prosper. Today so much of society rails against the Lord’s commands, not realising that we would be far better off in all sorts of ways if we followed God's commands. The people needed to be careful to follow God’s ways, then they would increase in numbers.
6:4
“Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one”. This is known as the “Shema”. There is debate about the precise meaning of the words. Alternatives include “The Lord our God is one Lord”, “The Lord is our God, the Lord is One” or “The Lord is our God, the Lord alone”. Whatever the precise “correct” translation, the fundamental point is that there is one God, He alone is the Lord, He is utterly unique. Israel would encounter many nations with all sorts of gods, it was essential that they realised that the Lord is the only true God. And the same applies to us today.
