Deuteronomy 6:5-9 - Love the Lord your God

6:5

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might”. Jesus quoted this as the greatest commandment, Mark 12:29,30, quoting it together with the Shema. God is to be the absolute focus of our lives. Nothing must compete with Him, we are to devote all of our being towards Him.

6:6-9

The commands that Moses was giving to the people were not to be taken lightly. They were to be treated seriously, they were to permeate all aspects of their existence. So they were to teach them to their children, they were to talk about them at home, when they walked along the way, at all times. They were to bind them to their hands and to hang them from their hats. This is where the idea of phylacteries came from. They were to be saturated in the word of the Lord.
