Deuteronomy 6:14-19 -Do not follow other gods

6:14,15

They must not follow any other gods, in particular the gods of the surrounding peoples. There is always a tendency to want to be like other people. We see that in Israel’s history, and it is a tendency that is common to all people. We must resist this tendency. The Lord is a jealous God. He will not allow any other gods, and if a people follow other gods, then He will reject that people. Israel is warned that she would be destroyed from the land, and that is what happened under Assyria for the northern kingdom, and under Babylon for Judah.

6:16-19

They were not to put the Lord to the test, and a specific example of this is given of when Israel did indeed put the Lord to the test. Remember that when Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus replied that we must not put God to the test. Instead they were to be diligent about keeping the commands of the Lord. They were to do what was “right and good in the Lord’s sight”. Then it would go well with them. They would then be able to enter the land, and thrust out all her enemies. It seems so simple, and at one level it was simple. However, the heart of man is sinful beyond measure, and events would prove that it was anything but simple.
