Deuteronomy 5:28-33 - That you may live

5:28,29

Naturally the Lord knew all that the people were saying and had said to Moses. Moreover, God said that it was good, for it was based on a proper recognition of who the Lord was, and of their own true state. Most rubbish ideas come out of distorted (to put it mildly) conceptions of who God is and who we are. God knew that this state of affairs would not last, and bemoans the fact. For a proper fear of God leads to right actions and is the source of true wisdom.

5:30-33

So God tells Moses to send the people to their tents, while Moses stayed with the Lord so that He could give Moses all the commands and decrees that he was to teach the people. The things that they were to follow in the land He was giving them to possess. The commands of the Lord were to be followed carefully, not turning aside to either the right or left. We have a habit of either relaxing things that should not be relaxed, or making things over strict, that should not be over strict. If they had walked in the ways of the Lord they would have lived long and prospered.
