Exodus 18:13-16 - Why do you sit alone?

18:13,14

The good credentials of Jethro have been established, now we will see him giving Moses some very sound advice. Moses was the leader and he sat to “judge the people”, this meant resolving issues, giving decisions. This lasted from morning till evening. Moses was the only one doing this, and Jethro was very concerned about it, wondering why on earth Moses was doing things this way.

18:15,16

Moses explained what he was doing, or at least as he saw it. People came to him to “inquire of God”. So when they had a dispute they came to Moses, expecting Moses to give a judgement that would be in line with what God would say. Moses would explain the “laws” of God. Of course, at this point “the Law” had not been given, so this would be a more general explanation of the ways of God.
