17:7
The place was called Massah and Meribah because it was a place of testing and quarrelling. The people were testing God, but He was actually testing them. It was the complete lack of trust in the people that was clearly demonstrated. “Is the Lord among us or not?” This is the heart of the unbelief in the people.
17:8
We now have the Israelites facing danger from the Amalekites. So since the Red Sea they have faced various dangers, lack of food, lack of water and now military opposition. In all of them God provides. It is not surprising that Amelakites fought against them, for from their point of view there was a danger that the Israelties would occupy fertile lands.
