John 19:12,13 - You are not Caesar's friend

19:12

Jesus’ words to Pilate seem to have had some effect, for from that point on he sought to release Jesus. However, the effect was not that deep. Pilate was essentially a weak man, responding to pressures and fears, just like many politicians today. Pilate could have just released Jesus if he was willing to do so. The Jewish leaders knew that Pilate was weak, so they reminded him of his fear of Rome, telling him that if he released Jesus he was no friend of Caesar. The Jewish leaders could write to the Roman authorities, and had done so in the past.

19:13

The synoptics give more details, John states that Pilate came and sat down on the judgement seat, implying that he is sentencing Jesus to death. It is only when we are motivated by love for God above all else that we live truly good and worthwhile lives. The greatest commandment, to love the Lord our God with all that we have, is the most beneficial thing that we can do.
