16:27-30
Despite the clear instructions, some of the people went out on the seventh day to do more gathering, but found nothing. This is a very human reaction. We do not by nature like relying on God, it is something we have to learn how to do. The Sabbath was created for man, it is a gift to us as a day of rest. We do not need to work on that day, there are times when we can take a rest. Moreover, the Lord makes provision so that we can rest. But we do need to trust God.
16:31-36
We now get a more detailed description of the manna. This shows that this stuff was real. Some of it was to be kept as a reminder of how God had provided for them in the wilderness. This was done. They continued to eat the manna for the forty years that they were in the wilderness. Once they entered Canaan it was no longer needed. God makes special provision for us in wilderness times, but this is only for a time. For the most part, things are provided by natural means.
