16:12
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now”. Jesus was aware of the emotional/psychological state of the disciples. There was a limit to how much they could take at this point. Teaching someone does not just mean telling them everything we can. Just because we have said something does not mean that someone has heard and understood it.
16:13
The revelation did not stop with Jesus, but was continued with the Holy Spirit. However, we need to be careful about what this means. It does not mean He is going to reveal doctrines that are not in Scripture, and definitely not things that are contrary to Scripture. We should also bear in mind that these words were directed towards the apostles. The Spirit would give them insight into the revelation of Jesus Christ and its implications. Indeed, it says “He will guide you ..., for He will not speak on His own authority”. When it talks of “the things to come” this is not just talking about the end times, but about how things would function with Jesus ascended and the Spirit sent by God.
