Exodus 12:1-4 - It shall be the first month of the year for you

12:1

Before the final plague actually happens there are a lot of details about the Passover feast. In a sense the killing of the firstborn was not the main issue (the Egyptians would have thought differently, of course). It was looking forward to the feast of the Passover, which in turn was looking forward to the cross, the true Passover Lamb.

12:2-4

“This month shall be for you the beginning of months”. The Exodus was the founding event for the nation of Israel, just as the cross is the founding event for Christians. The reference to the “tenth day” may just be a matter of splitting the month into three equal parts (rather than any relation to ten being a perfect number). Each household was to take a lamb, and the man was the head of the household. They were going to eat the lamb, and smaller households were to join together so that they could eat a whole lamb.
