Exodus 12:11-15 - It is the Lord's Passover

12:11-13

This was not a normal sit down meal. Their belt was to be fastened, they were to have sandals on their feet, they were to have a staff in their hands and to eat it quickly. They were to be ready to go, for all this was preparing them to leave for a new land. In the same way when we take communion, we are preparing to leave for a new land. We are strangers and aliens in this world.

Why was all this needed? Because the Lord was going to pass through all the land in judgement. In the same way as God created Israel to worship Him, God has set apart a people to worship Him in all the world. There will come a day of judgement. The blood of the lamb would protect the Israelites from the judgement. Likewise, the blood of Jesus protects us from the final judgement.

12:14, 15

We see more evidence that this event was intended to be foundational for the nation. It was to be a memorial day, and one kept as "a feast to the Lord". We then get instructions for the feast. They were to eat unleavened bread for seven days, and they were to make sure that there was no leaven at all in the house. Failure to follow the "rules" would lead to a person being cut off from the nation of Israel. God sets the rules for who was a member of Israel, and how remained so. Likewise, God sets the criteria for who enters the kingdom, not man.
