John 2:21,22 - Then they believed the Scripture

2:21

John makes it clear that Jesus was referring to His body when He talked of “destroying this temple”. John quite often gives explanations in order to avoid any misunderstanding. It was in Jesus that we find the full presence of God. As it says in Col 1:19, God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Christ. This also ensures that we understand the resurrection to be the bodily resurrection. All talk of a spiritual resurrection, or similar notions, are just so much nonsense.

2:22

It was only after the resurrection that the disciples realised the significance of what Jesus had said. They “believed Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken”. Note the equivalence of Scripture and the words of Jesus, and note this both ways! The obvious way is that the words of Jesus are authoritative, but the other is that Scripture (meaning here the Old Testament) is equivalent. We can only get the full significance of the resurrection in the light of the Old Testament.
