Genesis 11:10-32 - Finally to Abraham

11:10-26

The rest of the chapter is building up to Abraham, who is perhaps the key figure in the Old Testament, and is certainly regarded in the New Testament as the most important figure in the Old. We have a whole list of people who lived, fathered a son, and then other sons and daughters. The age at which they had their first son is now much more in line with what is normal. In fact the age, while a little older than what was the norm, is quite similar to the age of having a first child today. The age people lived to is coming down as well.

11:27-32

Terah was Abraham’s father. Josh 24:2 tells us that Terah worshipped idols. Abram, as he was then known, married Sarai, who was barren. Lot is also introduced. Lot is Abram’s nephew. Terah set out with Abram, Lot and Sarai from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. We are not told why he did this. Ur did come under attack, so it may be that he foresaw the danger and was moving to somewhere safer. However, he did not get to Canaan, choosing to settle in Harran, and there he died. So we have reached the end of the first part of Genesis.
