2:4
“Woman, why do you involve me” sounds a rather harsh way of answering His mother. Actually it does not imply any harshness at all. However, it is not the term that one would expect a son to use of his mother. “Why do you involve me” does indicate a distance between Jesus and His mother in this matter. I.e. Why does she think that Jesus should be involved in this matter? Jesus was unique, and His mission was unique. She, along with everyone else, needed to realise this. The Pharisees got it all wrong because they saw Jesus from a purely human perspective. We get it all wrong if we regard Jesus from a purely human perspective. Having said this, we also need to bear in mind that Jesus did deal with the problem of the wine shortage!
“My hour has not yet come”. This phrase recurs many times in John, and refers to the cross. So what has that got to do with the present situation? Maybe there is an allusion to Jesus not drinking wine until He drinks it anew in the Kingdom of God (Mark 14:25)?
