Genesis 13:16-18 - Walk through the land

13:16

The promises to Abraham have involved offspring, we now get more about offspring. His offspring will be like the dust of the earth, too numerous to count. There was a problem though, at least from a human perspective. Abram and Sarai had no children and were unable to do so. This was an enormous problem from Abram’s perspective, but God knew what He was going to do. God does not base His plans and promises for our lives on our resources and abilities, but on His resources and abilities.

13:17,18

Abram is now told to walk through the land “for I will give it to you”. We are to look ahead to our inheritance. But there is an important point to note. Abram’s walking through the land did not mean he would get the land. It was because God was going to give the land to him and his offspring that Abram was to walk through the land. We need to get the order right. Particularly in charismatic circles we can think that it is “walking through the land” that is the key. “If we do this God will do that”. Walking through the land was the response to the promise, not the cause of the promise.
