2:19
Jesus now says His famous words, “destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days”. No one had a clue what He was on about, thinking He must be referring to the physical temple. And the words would later be used in accusation against Him (Mark 14:58), and then in mockery while He was on the cross (Mark 15:29). However, the words did not make sense if He was referring to the temple building, for they would then mean that the religious leaders would be destroying the temple. Jesus’ words were also an answer to the religious leader’s demand for a sign. The resurrection provided the proof that Jesus had the authority to do the things He did.
2:20
The Jews were incredulous, because they thought He was referring to the physical temple. The temple had taken forty six years to build. The second temple had been built by Zerubabbel, or rather started by him. After its completion it had suffered much damage, and it had been repaired by Herod the Great. It is this restoration that the forty six years refers to.
